While in Savannah we have pretty much grown accustomed to our hometown receiving all kinds of accolades, we're still tickled pink every time a new one comes along. And as the summer of 2015 rolls along, we are most certainly smiling as there are a number of national honors that have been added to the ever-growing list. You can read about five of them below.

Tybee Island Ranked #6 for America's Happiest Seaside Town

In February 2015, Coastal Living magazine selected Tybee Island as one of the 10 finalists in their annual contest for America's Happiest Seaside Town. They then left it up to the public to vote for the town of their choice. When the voting was done, Tybee—aka Savannah's beach—ranked #6.

Among the reasons why Coastal Living says Tybee made their list: three miles of soft, wide beaches, pristine marshes that are prettily painted by stunning sunrises and sunsets, photo-perfect scenery, cooling ocean breezes, and a lifestyle that is an island escape. We talked about all of this and more in our blog Five Reasons Tybee Island is a Happy Seaside Town. Click the title to read all about it.

Tybee Makes the List of America's Coolest Beach Towns

Another recognition Tybee Island has received comes from Matador Network, which bills itself as the largest independent travel publisher online. Tybee made their list of "America's 20 Coolest Beach Towns." These towns are ones where Matador Network says "the living is easy." We say, "That's what we call living on Tybee Time where folks chill out, dress down, and go with the flow."

Savannah Wins Top Ten Spot on Best Cities List

For the second year running, Savannah has taken the #3 spot on Travel + Leisure magazine's annual list of the 10 best cities in the U.S. and Canada. The list is compiled based on a survey of their well-traveled readers who are asked to rate cities on six characteristics: sights/landmarks, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people/friendliness, shopping, and value. Optional: for romance, for bars.

Given the characteristics rated, it's easy to see why Savannah is high on the list. From a vibrant, culture-laden urban core to beautifully blissful islands with distinct personalities, The Hostess City welcomes visitors and new residents with open arms, overflows with must-see's and must-do's, and offers up tantalizingly delicious cuisine and libations plus lots of chances to shop 'til you drop.

Savannah Designated One of America's Most "Playful" Cities

For the sixth year in a row, Savannah is a Playful City USA honoree. In partnership with Humana Foundation, KaBOOM! recognizes cities, towns and counties across the country that make it easy for all kids to get balanced and active play. Savannah's commitment to "playability" is plain to see. For example, you could easily spend the day playground hopping, as there are plenty to pick and choose from. Activity-rich community centers are definitely not in short supply. And Savannah is well known for her abundant green spaces that include the 22 lush historic downtown squares and hundreds of acres of shaded parks, many of them with walking trails and sports courts. For this honor, Savannah is in the good company of Richmond Hill, our "neighbor" just down the road.

Savannah's Culinary Scene Earns Recognition

On Savannah's culinary scene, Food and Wine magazine included The Grey on its inaugural annual list of the nation's 5 Best New Restaurants. The Grey opened in December 2014 in what used to be a Greyhound bus station. The 1938 Art Deco building has been handsomely brought back to life with many of its historical elements preserved, like the original brick walls and pink terrazzo floor.

The Grey was also a semi-finalist for a 2015 James Beard Award (one of the culinary world's highest honors) in the best new restaurant category. Savannah also had another James Beard Award semi-finalist in the outstanding baker category—Cheryl and Griffith Day, the founders of Back in the Day Bakery. Located in a pastel-painted former gas station, this bake-from-scratch bakery is a charming vintage spot where you can enjoy old-school sweet treats, savory lunch fare, and yummy coffee.

These are but a few of Greater Savannah's many accolades. Interested in more? Check out the Visit Savannah website; it has a detailed list dating back to 2013.
