My how time flies! August has arrived already, and soon Savannah will be gearing up for the fall festival season. But before then, we’ve still got “a bushel and a peck” of exciting events and many of them are FREE. Savannah-based duo Song Bandits (Steve Fishack and Mary Ann Pridgen) and Savannah musician Ricky Standard will regale the crowd with a marvelous evening of acoustical music. Song Bandits draws inspiration from artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Ricky Standard is a master of the acoustic guitar and performs a range of tunes from various decades.

It’s a weekend when the folks at Edgar’s Proof & Provision, The Hostess City’s newest bourbon bar and gourmet eatery, will be celebrating beer and spirits produced in the state of Georgia. So stop by, raise a glass, enjoy the food and drink specials, the tastings and the live music. This new establishment overlooks historic Liberty Street and offers a selection of 120-plus whiskeys, including their private label, plus small plate selections featuring locally sourced ingredients.

It is season five for Savannah Voice Festival, and it returns with a three-week lineup of operas, concerts, musical theater, food and wine events and master classes. Highlights this year include comedic operas and note that the festival finale will focus on comedic aspects of musical theatre, opera and song with a blending of beautiful voices and glorious music. Also, choose your pleasure from among events like marathon sessions of arias and dinner and a show. And don’t miss the free offerings – master classes by legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes and the Sacred Song concert.

This month’s FREE Family Day at the Jepson Center is devoted to the art of William Wegman. Famous for his photographs of his beloved Weimaraners, Wegman often lets his sense of humor shine through by creating compositions of dogs in various costumes and poses. The day’s activities tie in with the Wegman exhibition (runs through Aug. 13). Participants will make their own altered photos and postcards and learn about Savannah dogs waiting to be adopted by loving pet parents.

The August edition of this fun run takes place mid-month and the theme is “Jersey Day.” Run one of the suggested routes or put your own spin on the two, three and near-five-mile run. You can also walk if you like. No matter if you walk or run, do plan to enjoy libations and mingle with other participants at the Rail Pub when the fun run is done; drink specials will be available.

Cost: Fun run is free
This is a must-attend event that features some of the finest culinary experiences you will find. It spans four days and offers unforgettable seafood and spirits. A 5-course premier dinner with guest chefs from coastal regions around the country kicks off the festival. New this year is a Riverside Lowcountry picnic; groove to the live music, savor the all-you-can-eat oysters and fabulous sides and bask in the ambiance of the sunset over the river. The annual showcase of restaurants and mixologists is back in all its glory. And as always, wind it up with cocktails, jazz, and Sunday brunch.

The film that closes out the Tybee Island summer outdoor film series is Lost and Found. The story is one about two young brothers who discover that their grandfather, who literally vanished, once owned the remote island where they are spending their summer. The plot thickens as they also learn that their grandfather designed a complex treasure hunt that leads to a vast fortune.

It’s Savannah’s sweetest birthday block party! Every year, Leopold’s Ice Cream throws a spectacular celebration. Their homemade ice cream has been delighting folks of all ages since 1919. That makes this year birthday number 98. Single scoops will be 98 cents all day long, and the party will be a blast with live music, games and kids’ activities. Join the festivities and make some tasty memories!

Cost: Block party is free
Don’t forget, the third Saturday and Sunday of each month (April-December), Unity in the Community hosts a family-friendly festival on River Street. This month the theme is River Street Dog Stroll. So, bring all of your four-legged family members, let them show off their best side, and see if they win a prize. And enjoy browsing the arts and crafts and taking in the festival entertainment.

Lovely Daffin Park is the place, and the start of the 2017 High School Cross Country Season is the reason for the run. Come out bright and early to participate in the open 5000-meter race and support high school cross country. Then hang around to cheer on the teams in the varsity and JV races and to see what team will start the season with a win.
