Savannah Blues, Jazz & BBQ Festival

Like jazz? How about blues? BBQ too? Then you’re in luck. Savannah is celebrating year four of the Blues, Jazz & BBQ festival on the historic riverfront. Plan to nosh to your heart’s content on some of the most mouth-watering BBQ around. Don’t be shy about snapping your fingers to the rhythm of Southern blues. Don’t be surprised when your foot starts tapping to the syncopated beat of free-flowing jazz. And prepare to delight in browsing the wares of artisans set up in Rousakis Plaza.

Juneteenth Festival

June’s FREE Family Day at the Jepson Center features their annual Juneteenth Festival, which commemorates the end of slavery in America. As is Jepson’s usual, this event will be packed with hands-on arts activities for all ages. As well, attendees will be regaled with tales told by local storytellers, treated to a live a cappella concert by reunited members of the Gospelaires from Savannah’s Pin Point community, and immersed in Savannah history and the Gullah Gechee culture.

Jailbreak Mud Challenge

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is throwing down the gauntlet for the 2nd year in a row. They say come out to their training course on June 11 and see if you can successfully outrun the law as a pretend fugitive on the lam. What stands between you, freedom and the jailbreak after-party? Only about 50 grueling obstacles and 5 miles of mud. Run alone or—to up the difficulty—participate in a two or four-person tethered team. This challenge is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it is for a good cause. Proceeds go to residential facilities and quality care for disadvantaged youth.

TRY-BEE Triathlon

Are you ready to swim, bike and run? Do it all in a single endurance event, the Triathlon on Tybee Island. The swim is 50 meters out into the sparkling blue Atlantic, then 650 meters parallel to shore and 50 meters back. Next, you’ve got an out-and-back 20K bike ride to Fort Pulaski State Park, with the scenery on your ride being some of the most pristine marshland on the Georgia coast. Last, you’ll wind up the endurance disciplines with a 5K run around Tybee’s quaint neighborhoods.

JCB Mudfest

If you’ve ever liked playing in the mud, you’ll get a kick out of the head-to-toe muck and mire at the annual JCB Mud Run. Favorites like the JCB Lake and the tire field are on the 5-mile course plus a few new obstacles that you’ll slosh and tackle your way through. This year’s event also has a 5K distance option. Not that fond of mud? Watch the fun and cheer from the sidelines. Stop by the Party Pit too for frosty beverages and yummy food. Proceeds benefit early childhood programs.

JUNE 18-19

Savannah Summer Slam

This year marks the inaugural Summer Slam Tournament hosted by the Savannah Derby Devils. You can look forward to two days of fast-moving, action-packed bouts between female flat-track roller derby leagues from Savannah, Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Miami and Tallahassee. And the weekend fun tops off with a mixed scrimmage featuring players from all of the teams.

Summer Sizzler 5K

While this event is dubbed the Summer Sizzler, its course traverses terrain on Wilmington Island that is mostly shaded by canopies of mature trees, and the views are beautiful to boot. In addition, you’ll be running to support summer educational opportunities for low-income students, and in the good company of novices, beginners and diehard athletes from all over the Low Country.  A 1-mile Kids Run has been added this year, so bring the youngsters out to savor the sport.

Time:8:00am start time for kids, 8:15am start for 5K

Cost:$25 for 5K ($30 on race day), $5 for kids
