March is an exciting month in Savannah!  The weather is warming up on its way to ideal where it will stay throughout the season.  The events scene is heating up with lots of great goings-on.  Our city picks up the post-winter pace a bit with the start of one of its peak festival seasons. And, in keeping with Savannah's Irish roots,  we carry on   with  "celebrating   the green."


First Friday for Folk Music

In March,  folk music enthusiasts get the pleasure of listening to a twin-bill concert that features Savannah's  own  Clark Byron and Nashville duo Danika Holmes and Jeb Hart.  Byron is an award- winning singer who is said to have a voice of gold and he has been performing gospel, country,  folk and pop music for more than  40 years.  Danika Holmes delivers smooth,  soulful vocals and will be accompanied by guitar aficionado  Jeb Hart. Together they create a unique blend of acoustic pop.

Savannah Stopover Music Festival

Each year, an impressive variety of regional and national acts gather in Savannah for the  Stopover Music  Festival. Once a performance   "pit stop"  for musicians en route to Austin's  SXSW Music Conference,  the festival is now a staple f the Savannah music scene. This year's  lineup  showcases 80-plus  bands in multiple   Historic  District venues that are an easy walking distance apart.

Craft Brew Races

You can join in on the fun at the  Craft  Brew Races whether you participate in the  5K portion or just enjoy some suds and sun. If you walk or run, you'll  do so on a scenic, flat course along Grand  Prize of America  Avenue on Hutchinson Island. And when the race is done,  head to the beer festival to snag a snack, listen to live music, sample local brews and marvel at the downtown skyline.

Tybee Island Irish Heritage Celebration Parade

Tybee Islanders invite one and all to dress up in green and come out to the island to show their  Irish pride at this annual family-friendly parade.  It's a longstanding tradition for local Irish families to proudly march down  Butler  Avenue.  You can also expect to see bagpipers,  floats,  Irish dancers and a feisty group of ladies known as the  Beach Brigade who do synchronized dance routines.

Tara Feis Irish Celebration

Looking for a family-oriented, alcohol-free celebration of Irish tradition and culture?  Tara Feis fits the bill.  For 26 years now, this salute to everything Irish has been a can't-miss  event for all ages. There are activities for the wee ones, creative crafts for kids, entertainment for grown-ups,   and authentic   Irish food and music to be enjoyed by all. The venue is Emmet  Park, a pretty green space that overlooks the  Savannah River, and that has a storied  Irish heritage of its very own.

St. Practice  Day Bar Crawl

For those looking to get ready for  Savannah's  St. Patrick's  Day celebration and the flow of adult libations,  there's  a bar crawl for that.  It takes place on Saturday before the holiday and crawlers get drink specials, plus they get to take home what organizers are calling  Pot O' Gold swag. Dressing in green from head to toe or in Irish-themed attire is welcomed and highly encouraged.

Cost:         $15 until  March  10, $20 on the event date


St. Patrick's Day Celebration on the River

There's  no doubt about it. Savannah  knows  how to throw   a jamming   street party,  and the celebration   for  St. Patrick's  Day is the  "granddaddy   of them  all."  Everywhere you look there's   green, as somewhere in the neighborhood of 300,000  people partake of food,  live entertainment,    and beverages over the course of the  3-day celebration.   The St. Patrick's  Day shenanigans span the riverfront and carry over to two spacious blocks around  City Market.

When:     March 16 - 18

Place:      River Street  and City Market

Cost:         Free and open to the  public

                    $10/day  to  "party  with  a pint"


Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade

Rain or shine,  come the morning of March  17 the second-largest  St. Patrick's  Day parade in the U.S. will make its way through the streets of downtown past thousands of spectators who likely started the day with a "top  0' the morning"   greeting.   Arrive early to get a good spot for watching floats, pipe bands,  Irish dancers,  marching  Irish families and an array of other groups pass by. Reserved bleacher seating  ($30-$45/person)    is being offered by Kelly Tours.

When:     March 17

Savannah Music Festival

If you've  been waiting with bated breath for the  2017 Savannah  Music  Festival,  note that this unrivaled   17-day  cultural experience starts on March  23. Pick and choose among more than  100 productions spread throughout 10 unique and intimate settings.  Whatever genre strikes your fancy, you're  sure to find it. The festival offers a musical mash-up of 20-plus  genres.  So, pick your pleasure and get ready to clap your hands, tap your toes,  snap your fingers and groove with the beat.

A-Town Get Down Festival

This annual art and music festival takes place in a new location this year.  It will be held on Indian Street near the Talmadge  Bridge. The new space affords room for larger stages,  more musical artists, and more live art installations.   Catch musical performances that range from blues and funk to choral music and classic rock. See amazing visual arts that include collaborative paintings.  And go home at the end of the day inspired by this celebration of community and artistic expression.

Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens

If you have ever wondered if Savannah's grand old homes are as beautiful inside as they are on the outside,  the  82nd annual  Tour of Homes and Gardens is your chance to see for yourself.  Each of the tour days features a different historic neighborhood and a different group of 5-8 homes.  So you get to see a variety of architectural styles like Victorian,   Romantic  Revival, Greek Revival and early  20th century.  You also get to choose among more than a dozen special events.
