There is no doubt about it. Savannah has a great many things going for it and superb shopping is one of them. This holds true whether you are in a mall, marketplace or outlet mood, or you feel like roving from shop to shop along picturesque pedestrian-friendly streets.

With such a myriad of shopping experiences to choose from in Savannah—see a sampling of retail destinations below—you can shop to your heart's content. And chances are you'll find just what you're looking for, pleasantly passing the time of day included.

Broughton Street

Shoppers seeking a "Main Street" vibe will find Broughton Street reminiscent. It's been a prime shopping district since the days when ladies donned high heels and gloves to go out and shop. Today it's lined with historic buildings occupied by stores that run the gamut from locally owned to nationally known, with goods ranging from clothing to furniture. A multi-million dollar restoration project along this corridor boasts a collection of new retailers, adding to the list of don't miss stops.

City Market

Specialty shops of all sorts are among the trio of mainstays in the vibrant pedestrian mall called City Market. It stands on the very spot of Savannah's first open-air market, which came into being in the 1700s. Shops, art galleries and eateries share space in refashioned warehouses from the olden days. So, you get a peek into the past as you browse all manner of merchandise—apparel, cigars, Georgia products, gourmet pet treats, and gourmet foodie finds like Southern confections… and more.

Downtown Design District

Flying under the radar yet located in the core of the Historic District is a pocket of shops called the Downtown Design District. All of the stores are local so you get a good dose of Southern hospitality as you shop, and your shopping stroll affords scenic vistas. Your trip is equally rewarding in terms of store choices. The area is especially known for boutiques that sell unique and collectible items as well as for design and home decor shops, and jewelry and couture boutiques.

A short walk from the heart of the Downtown Design District takes you to a unique shopping spot—shopSCAD—the retail gallery for the Savannah College of Art and Design. It's located in the SCAD flagship building Poetter Hall, which was once an armory and which dates all the way back to 1892. The shop is a treasure trove of original works designed and created by SCAD students, professors, staff and alumni. New items arrive daily and the shop is filled with one-of-a-kind gifts, fashions, fine art, home goods and jewelry. So opportunities abound for that "perfect find."

River Street

"Uniquely Savannah" most aptly describes shopping on River Street. The area is typically abuzz with pedestrians browsing the potpourri of retailers and galleries. Shop for most everything from sweets to cigars, clothing to curios, and accessories to art, winding your way through an open-air market and along old-world cobblestones that weave past restored old-time buildings that house galleries and shops. Plus, soak in riverfront views and take a break at your choice of restaurants and bars.

Oglethorpe Mall

Located on the Southside, Oglethorpe Mall is one of Savannah's two regional malls. It's been a Savannah favorite for over 40 years and offers a multitude of brands all under one roof. Here your "retail therapy" includes four major department stores (regional and national) that are the mall's anchors, which are complemented by popular chain and specialty stores that number 100-plus.

Savannah Mall

A trip to Savannah Mall, also on the Southside, will offer up several department stores along with an eclectic mix of local and national retailers; you can shop the spectrum from designer wear to sporting goods. And your shopping venture is likely to be highlighted by a special function; center court features activities such as art exhibits, fashion and flower shows, and Santa at Christmas.

The Shoppes of Savannah

If you're driving southwest of Savannah, a small outlet center named The Shoppes of Savannah can be a spot to score some savings. It's about 20 minutes from downtown and has a little something for everyone—items like bed and bath products, hosiery and footwear, children's clothes and accessories, pool and spa products, uniforms, closeout books, and apparel for the entire family.

Tanger Outlets

An addition to the Greater Savannah shopping landscape in 2015, Tanger Outlets puts more than 85 brand-name and designer stores within about a 20 minute drive northwest of downtown. You can easily spend a few hours or shop the day away snagging deals on something for yourself, your home, or your family and friends. And, make a note that there's a Phase II expansion of this popular retail center with an opening date of Spring 2016.

There are a variety of other retail destinations around the city too. Some—such as the upscale shopping centers in Midtown for instance—are neighborhood staples that feature locally owned favorites. Others—including ones along Abercorn Street which offers a sundry mix of retail centers—have big-name chain stores that aren't in the malls. And the list goes on with even more.
