The first settlers in the Savannah area couldn't help but notice the number of islands that lay just offshore. The coastal islands of Georgia were places for plantations and didn't have a lot of inhabitants. It permitted a way of life to grow, which was a little bit slower and unhurried. People got a chance to know their neighbors and didn't have the need to keep the doors locked all the time. The islands are now the center of a lot of real estate development, but that doesn't mean the way of life has dramatically changed. You can still feel the sand between your toes on Tybee Island.

A Quiet Vacation Spot

We must point out that Tybee Island is a place with a number of vacation rentals on it. The population does swell during the summer months as people seek to escape the Georgia heat and the hustle and bustle of the city. Vacation season comes and goes as the last vacationer heads out you have the shores all to yourself.

Tybee Island has had a number of lighthouses over the years and the Tybee Lighthouse has the distinction of being the tallest and also the oldest lighthouse in the state of Georgia. Fort Screven is not one of the Civil War forts you find around Savannah, but it is a historical site with several impressive gun batteries. If you go along the beach you may stumble across nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles. You also can do some very serious bird watching in the wintertime as flocks of pectoral sandpipers, plovers, terns, and other birds make their winter home in the trees on the shores of Tybee Island.

Tybee Tacky Sets the Style

A number of the islands are heavily developed with golf courses and communities that have control access to them. That is not the state of affairs of this island. The local community mixes with the well-to-do and the down and out, surfers and old-timers, rednecks and Yankees. It is a stew of happy faces and treasured tales about an island that encourages people to slow down just a little bit and enjoy the breeze. Tybee used to be the Hilton Head of the 19th century and there are some very stunning homes that attest to that notoriety. The cottages and their architecture, fairly well dominate the structures. Some of these properties can actually be thought of as "fixer-uppers" and the right person will find some of these cottages to be the challenge they are looking for. Incidentally, if you are remodeling a house you may not want to bother with air-conditioning. There are some very nice and cool sea breezes that come through at night.
