Not many people are aware of this, but Savannah was very much a planned community. James Oglethorpe knew what he was doing when he laid out the urban design for the Hostess City. There are deliberately laid out avenues and squares throughout historic Savannah, seeing to it that traffic doesn't become a honking nuisance. What adds to the tremendous charm of the design are the row houses you will find bordering the squares of Savannah.

Oglethorpe's Plan Enhanced Savannah

The original founder of the Georgia colony was specific as far as how the property around the squares were to be used. The public buildings were to be constructed on Trust Lots and what he referred to as "Thythings" would be reserved for domestic homes. Some of the older houses were done in the Regency style, but most residents of Savannah considered this a little too pompous. You will see a lot of the Federal style of architecture along the Savannah squares. These houses specialize in cast iron railings and balconies. Stairs have a tendency to veer to a side as a visitor approaches the front door of the residence. These are not just one or two steps, but the exterior stairways have multiple steps leading up. This made perfect sense in the 19th century Savannah because of the high water table, and the possibility of flooding. Brick and masonry work were prevalent in order to reduce the hazard of fire, which had destroyed most of the homes built in the 18th century . The brick used for the row houses were locally produced and had a mottled surface which is referred to as "Savannah Grey."

A Relaxed Atmosphere

James Oglethorpe had no idea of traffic jams such as many American cities face. What he did for historic Savannah is create a means by which everything slows down just a little bit. There are avenues that allow for faster traffic, but with the row houses a frantic pace is often reduced to a leisurely walk. It makes living in the heart of Savannah so much a pleasure. It is true that some of these houses are handed down from family to family over the generations, but there are a number of sales for every now and then.
