Savannah staffers praise storm efforts, push forward

The Savannah City Council on Thursday praised city staffers and residents for their responses to Hurricane Matthew, while getting a briefing on the recovery ahead.

During and after the storm, city employees worked to ensure the continued operation of drainage systems, repair water and sewage lines and deal with dozens of broken traffic signals, in addition to clearing roads and homes of fallen trees, according to department heads.

Federal judge directs state to extend Chatham County voter registration through Tuesday

A federal judge on Friday directed state officials to extend voter registration for Chatham County until Oct. 18 to remove registration problems posed by Hurricane Matthew and its aftermath. 

He granted an emergency preliminary injunction in response to a suit filed by attorneys for several civil rights groups who complained that Hurricane Matthew had deprived potential voters of their right to register to vote in the Nov. 8 general election.
